Program preparation
The second MasterShift Program is built upon the first one, primarily focusing on its application. During the preparatory phase of the program, we explore the experience that the participants and their managers have gained since their completion of the previous program, and look at all problems that have come up since then. The formation of training and consultation sessions for both groups and individuals will be based on the above.
Knowledge of company management – combined with company/plant simulation training
To work effectively, shift managers should not only have a broad knowledge of their own areas, but should understand the entire company and its processes, and should also understand how other divisions, units, and departments can be more effective and productive.
During the 1.5 day Company Management session, shift managers will become familiar with the entire operational system of their own company and plant within the framework of a company simulation program. Participants will have the opportunity to observe, consider, and make decisions as company managers, as well as to immediately see the outcome of their decisions. They will have the opportunity to set up alternatives, to choose among them, and then to discuss the effects of their decisions and correct them if necessary. During these 1.5 days, they will experience what happens in their workplace every day. However, now they will observe it not only from their point of view, but from that of their superior in the hierarchy. Thus, they will become familiar with and experience the decision makers’ roles and responsibilities. In addition, they will experience how their own and their groups’ decisions affect other areas, such as logistics, sales, marketing, and quality control.
After gaining this experience through the simulation exercise, they will then look at all the important theoretical knowledge of finance and company management which are necessary components of effective and successful work.
During the training shift managers will:
- learn about company processes and develop a better understanding of the financial and company management “environment”
- become acquainted with the most important company management principles
- learn how to calculate the most important production indices
- become familiar with the regularity of management decisions so as to gain a better understanding of management decisions and their effects
- explore more than just their own and their companion departments’ role and responsibility in production and operation processes
- become acquainted with the importance of inside communication flow and make an effort to improve their relationships with companion departments and units
Representation Training
During the first preparatory MasterShift Development Program, shift managers acquired the basis of communication. However, to be able to represent their group’s as well as their company’s interest, they must have a specialized knowledge of communication. As they must often give instructions, hold meetings, or make presentations to their subordinates and supervisors, they must know the principles of presentation. And as they must often organize conferences and trade meetings, and must also negotiate at those meetings, they must also be able to utilize the most important negotiation and influencing techniques. And finally, their writing skills must be improved as well, as they are often required to write reports, statements, and official letters.
During the training shift managers will:
- become acquainted with the methods of influencing and convincing, and will learn how to utilize these methods in their one-on-one relationships
- learn the most important rules and steps of negotiation
- learn the techniques of effective and genuine presentation
- receive individual feedback in order to become better presenters and negotiators
- receive practical guidance for their written communication
Team management training
One of the most important expectations of shift managers is that they build a unified and effective group, and that they bring out the group’s best. The question of what task they assign to whom is of the utmost importance, as in every group, certain people play certain roles. There are people who are leaders and others that pull you back. There are influential people; active and passive people; loyal and less loyal people. Shift managers should be able to deal with all of these different types of people. Therefore, they must know the principles and the background of group dynamics, the roles that exist in a group, and the driving forces of the group, as they must be successful team-builders in addition to being solid professional guides.
During the training shift managers will:
- become acquainted with the factors that influence team efficiency
- learn the basic principles of group dynamics and how to influence as team leaders
- become acquainted with various evocative tools
- gain individual experience through outdoor tasks, and experience the most important group and individual sentiments which are present in their own groups
Training and consultation
Shift managers should never be satisfied with the same level of performance and professional knowledge in their group. New tasks require enhanced expectations and better and more-prepared colleagues. Therefore, shift managers must not only train the new members of their team, but also the senior members. Companies and plants can only improve their production results if they regularly check and evaluate worker performance and if they set new goals. Shift managers play a key role in this. And they will only be able to perform this leadership task successfully if they learn the operation of performance-evaluation systems and understand their role in it as well as their responsibility.
During the training shift managers will:
- become acquainted with the most important forms of control, as well as the roles of these forms of control at their company
- become acquainted with the evaluation system utilized at their company (or the one that will be adapted) and learn all the necessary skills to be able to utilize the system
- practice leading evaluation and target-setting communication
- practice coaching techniques with individual (tailor-made) role-plays
Follow-up
The follow-up will take place 3-4 weeks after the training program. The trainer will once again meet with the participants so that they can individually report on their experiences. The participants will present the study - which they began to write at the beginning of the training program – dealing with their strengths and areas that require improvement. This study demonstrates their progress as well as their individual goals.
